Beyond the Margs: Hidden gems of Mexico
When you think of Mexico, your mind might immediately jump to turquoise waters, powdery white sand, and yes—ice-cold margaritas with a salt rim. But if you think Cancun’s beach bars and boozy sunsets is the best that Mexican paradise has to offer, you’re seriously missing out.
Mexico is teeming with jaw-dropping, soul-stirring experiences that go way beyond the cocktail menu. Think secret cenotes tucked beneath the jungle canopy, ancient Mayan ruins you can still climb, sleepy fishing villages where the ceviche is fresher than your last vacation, and spiritual experiences that connect you to the land in unforgettable ways.
So if you’re ready to trade your poolside pitcher for real adventure, let’s dive into the best hidden gems of the Riviera Maya and beyond — the kind of magic that can’t be blended and served with a lime.
Isla Holbox
Holbox is where you are most likely to find that powdery white sand you may be dreaming of for your vacation. This car free island is the perfect getaway from the every day hustle and bustle. Even better, this island is the beautiful home to flocks of wild flamingos, most likely to be seen in the summer and early fall.
Mayan Ruins
This may seem obvious, but what is special is that there are SO many options to choose from here. You have the famous Chichén Itzá, a UNESCO site and one the New 7 Wonders of the world, but if you want a bit more off the beaten track with just as much history you have plenty to choose from. At the large Kohunlich site, you will often find less crowd and structure you can actually (respectfully) climb! If you want to be immersed in the jungle of it all, there is an eco hotel next door you can stay at as well.
Cabo San Lucas
If you are a 90s kid like me you might hear Cabo and automatically remember the beautiful and fun spring break trips from “Laguna Beach” and “The OC.” It is so much more! This area has everything! From whale watching, party catamaran rentals, farm to table restaurants, beach clubs for the swimmable beaches, to rooftop bars that showcase both city and marina. There is truly something for everyone.
